Italian military writers and generals between Vienna and Istanbul.
L. F. Marsigli and his contemporaries

A considerable number of Italian generals in the service of the court of Leopold I (1640–1705), emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, king of Hungary, Bohemia, Croatia and Slavonia, contributed to the rise of the Austrian Habsburgs. During the second part of the 17th century, following the conclusion of the protestant wars in Europe, Leopold I’s multiethnic empire was forced to wage a war against the Ottomans, who had attacked the countries of the Austrian emperor, following partly also the interests and the advice of the great rival of Leopold, Louis XIV, king of France. The Italian generals became protagonists of these conflicts, both by fighting in the theoretical field – as military writers – and also in the practical sense, by fighting against the Ottomans in the military campaigns in Hungary.

This volume is the result of a long-term research project conducted in several Italian cities, and in Vienna and Istanbul, which has lasted almost a decade. In the present monograph, on the basis of partly unpublished sources, we can get to know in detail the lives, activities and writings of Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609–1680) from Modena, those of his pupil, the Neapolitan Antonio Caraffa (1646–1693) and in the most detail those of their follower, Bolognese count Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (1658–1730). In the appendix one can see the edition of many of these mostly Italian documents.

The first part of the book deals with the person of Raimondo Montecuccoli, who was not only a well-known theorist of the war against the Ottomans – who in his view were backward, and their army seemed to him to be afflicted by a complex social crisis – but he was also an experienced general, very active in the military campaigns in Transylvania (in 1661) and Hungary. This second expedition ended with the glorious victory of Szentgotthárd in 1664. This chapter has been complemented by the correspondence between Montecuccoli and Mattia de’ Medici in the given period, which has been discovered in the Archivio di Stato di Firenze. A part of this unpublished source material can be read in the appendix.

Antonio Caraffa followed faithfully the line determined by Montecuccoli, both in the political and in the military field, by helping Leopold I win against the enemies inside and outside of his empire. Among these enemies Caraffa was fighting mostly against Imre Thököly, a Hungarian ally of the Turks. A novelty of this chapter is the unpublished documents related to Antonio Caraffa’s activities. This source material has been discovered in the Archivio di Stato di Napoli, and a transcription of many of these documents can be read in the appendix of this volume.

The last protagonist of this volume, L. F. Marsigli had the opportunity to get in contact with the Ottomans in four distinct ways: when he was young, he travelled to the Ottoman capital, as a ‘turista curiosissimo’ (or rather as a spy) for almost a year; later he lived (and nearly died) among them as a slave, since before the siege of Vienna (1683) he got injured, captured and was sold to Ahmed Pasha of Temesvár; fighting against them in the Hungarian military campaigns; and finally, at the conclusion of the war, he took part in the negotiations of the peace of Carlowitz as a consigliere assistente of the two imperial deputies. Furthermore, after the stipulation of the peace-treaty, Marsigli received a diplomatic commission of primary importance, namely in 1699 he was delegated by Emperor Leopold I to determine and draw the new frontier-line, in other words, to fix the new border between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg one. This was a rather long and tiring task (that ended only in 1701), mostly because of the formalities that served to maintain the dignity and prestige of the Ottomans as an important power, even though they had to renounce in favour of the Habsburgs the territories of Hungary, Croatia, Slavonia and Transylvania. On the basis of his multiform experiences, he produced a number of writings, partly unpublished and kept today in the ‘Fondo Marsigli’ of the University Library of Bologna (BUB).

Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli’s most important writing about the Ottomans is entitled “Stato militare dell’Impero Ottomano, incremento e decremento del medesimo”, published in a bilingual (Italian-French) edition in 1732. This book has been analyzed by the author of the present monograph in a detailed manner, since it is an excellent source not only for the topic suggested by title, but also for the history of the war in Hungary against the Turks, and for the cultural life of the Ottoman Empire. In addition to these writings by Marsigli, we also have to mention his prestigious collection in Bologna of oriental manuscripts, with many Turkish documents, which is considered the second most important and valuable collection of this kind, after that of the Vatican Library.

From these case-studies, we can see how the military leaders of Italian origins, members of the so-called Militärpartei in Vienna promoted constantly – assuming also conflicts with the other fraction – the absolute need to drive the Ottomans out from the territory of the Hungarian Kingdom. These Italians propagated towards the ministers and the emperor himself the idea of a Great War against the Turks, which would destroy the forces of this Muslim power in Europe. On the one hand, in the political sense, among many other Italian soldiers, also Montecuccoli, Caraffa and Marsigli aimed to support the absolutistic goals of emperor Leopold, in order to increase efficiency in the war. On the other hand, in the military field with their writings and proposals, and obviously with their military activity, they contributed to the liberation of Hungary from the Ottomans, a process concluded with the treaty of Carlowitz in 1699.

L. F. Marsigli e i suoi contemporanei

17. Yüzyılın ikinci yarısında, Avrupa’daki Protestan savaşlarından sonra, I. Leopold’ün multi-etnik İmparatorluğu Leopold’ün rakibi Fransız Kralı 14. Louis’nin tavsiye ve çıkarlarını izleyerek Avusturya İmparatorunun topraklarına hücum eden Osmanlılar’a karşı savaşa girmek zorunda kaldı. I. Leopold’un İmparatorluğu Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun gerilemesinden faydalanarak II.
